Dan’s 650b all-road bike

December 5, 2024

In 1956, International Harvester had a two-tone pickup with this color, Cambrian Coral, as an option. Here it finds itself on a handmade bike 68 years later. I’ve shared a lot of posts of this bike coming together over the past few months on Instagram and Facebook (and even TikTok). For those of you who […]

Chip’s drop bar 29er

December 5, 2024

I’m approaching 20 years of bike building but I’m still finding new things I haven’t done (or rarely do) to keep it fun. Chip’s bike was a first for me on a few fronts and I’m psyched with the final result! Is it a mountain bike? Maybe? It depends who you ask. It can definitely […]

Rob’s fixed gear

November 18, 2024

I’ve known Rob at MER Bags in Brooklyn for 20 years. We discussed having me building him a bike a long time ago (I actually took his measurements in 2011!). This one is long overdue. About 10 years ago I built a fork for his Soma track bike and so I ended up building this […]

David’s 700c light touring bike

November 13, 2024

The main color of David’s frame is New Zealand Green with a very dark version of that green on the head tube and gold detailing all around. Custom from rack with detachable lowriders, a custom bilaminate quill stem, integrated lighting, connectorless generator hub, etc. Lots of details to zoom in on!

Joe’s dynamo powered Di2 disc randonneur

October 29, 2024

Joe’s 700c dynamo powered Di2 disc randonneur is finally ready! I did away with the battery in this iteration (this is the 3rd dynamo powered Di2 bike I’ve built) but it still needed a capacitor in order to shift at slow speeds. So it goes. He’s been incredibly patient which I am greatly appreciative. But […]

Chris C.’s 650b light touring bike

October 29, 2024

This VW Reef Blue bi-laminate 650b randonneur/light touring bike was a fun one to put together. Even more fun to test ride as it’s almost exactly my size! Lots of details include the custom bar ends, matching bi-lam quill stem, and the modified Miche needle bearing headset. The brand new Dura Ace 7700 (GS rear […]

Pat and Cece’s tandem

October 29, 2024

This tandem has been an ongoing project here in the shop. I started it in January 2023, I think? Technically I started it last year by making the fillet brazed brakeset. I do very few tandems so I really never know how much time to dedicate to such a project. It was originally going to […]

BQ issue 61 test bike redux

October 29, 2024

Back in 2016 I started building myself a new 650b light touring bike to replace the 700c bike I rode in the Oregon Manifest in 2011. What I built ended up getting sent to Bicycle Quarterly to be reviewed in issue 61. And then when I got it back, I continued to ride it as […]

Daralyn’s 650b randonneur

April 1, 2024

I’m hoping that people choose a color scheme like this on future builds. The head tube is a shade of the VW River Blue that I cut with a white pearl and sprayed over a white base. The effect is very pleasing to my eyes. One of the (many) neat details on this bike included […]

James’ singlespeed

March 27, 2024

It’s very rare that I get to build a single speed these days. When I worked at Circle A Cycles, it seemed like every other bike that went out the door was a fixed gear or single speed. The building of this one conveniently coincided with the fixed gear show in Brooklyn put on by […]

I started making these fender reinforcements 3 yea I started making these fender reinforcements 3 years ago when the Honjo ones weren’t available. I thought I made a lot back then but I just ran out! I *think* I made enough this time to last me 5 years or so? It’s just one of the details that I enjoy including on the builds. The mold was made from a section of fender, a box, and a bunch of steel reinforced Cerrobend. That was a fun project in itself! I’ll share that video in my stories. #fenders #sheetmetal #sheetmetalfab #chapmancycles
It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so m It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so many good memories with but this one is going to a good home. I stripped and repainted this one a grayish-green version of its old self. I have a new bike now and so I needed to move this one to a place where it will get loved and ridden which is with a longtime friend in California. Enjoy your “new” bike, Chris! #chapmancycles
Refinished my old bike from green to another graye Refinished my old bike from green to another grayer green before it goes off to its new home. Brakes are cleaned and re-polished for the first time in 3 years. Good as new! I added an old clip of how the brakes work at the end. Enjoy! #weirdbrakewednesday #filletbrazed #chapmancycles
I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramoun I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramount. The water bottle boss was oddly 64mm too low on the down tube which functionally is mostly fine but visually was unbalanced. I filled the old lower boss and brazed in a new one higher on the tube. Primed and ready for basecoats now. #silverbrazing #chapmancycles

Some more detail shots of Erik’s brick red metallic bike. The paint really comes to life in the sunlight! Again, thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is Erik’s brick red metallic 650b fendered road bike. This one was built around a heavily carved set of Prugnat lugs similar to two other bikes I have shown in Philly in previous years. Erik had this one completely planned out from the start. He provided all the parts which made the final stretch to the Expo go just a little quicker! I wasn’t able to take photos before the Expo because of weather and time constraints but thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! More detail photos of this one coming up tomorrow. #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
