James’s light touring (basket) bike

James’s light touring (basket) bike

May 9, 2019

If 15 years ago you told me that my future self would be building a touring bike with a Wald basket on it, I’d have thought you were crazy. Wald is not known for making the highest quality components but their baskets are the standard that all others are compared to in the bike world. […]

Mike’s touring bike

Mike’s touring bike

March 23, 2019

When I started building bikes at Circle A Cycles, my friend Mike was an early supporter of mine. I think the bike I built for him was one of my first 10 that I made. I was excited when he wanted a new bike from me. The first one I had built for him was […]

Jim’s vintage inspired 753 road bike

Jim’s vintage inspired 753 road bike

March 20, 2019

I like keeping it new and fresh by taking on projects that make me step outside my usual comfort zone. With this bike I was stepping out of my comfort zone and into a time machine. This bike may look like it’s from 1980 but it was just finished in 2019. The biggest challenge with […]

Elisha’s 650b+ all road bike

Elisha’s 650b+ all road bike

January 27, 2019

Elisha was originally looking for a rigid off road bike with a 3”+ tire but that was beyond the scope of what I do. We compromised on clearances for 60mm tires (2.35”) with an option to run 47mm tires with fenders. She had an Ultegra 11-speed drivetrain from another bike so we incorporated it into […]

Jon’s Reynolds 753 road bike

Jon’s Reynolds 753 road bike

January 25, 2019

This is the second bike that I’ve built for Jon. The previous bike was more of a 700c randonneur but this one was to be a straight up road bike. I conveniently came across two sets of Reynolds 753 and offered to build his bike from one of those sets. It was my first time […]

Gene’s Di2 light touring bike

January 3, 2019

Building this bike for Gene was like building my bike over and making a bunch of little improvements along the way. I do love my bike but some of the details I would’ve changed include using an inverted Edelux headlight, slightly different wire routing, seat tube taillight, improved lowrider design, and a needle bearing headset. […]

Frank’s Jones bar touring bike

September 26, 2018

I’ve known Frank for years as he has been a staple at many handmade bike shows. He even puts on the Ann Arbor Handmade Bicycle Show in Michigan. He’s well known in the cycling community as the curator of Lugs Not Drugs on Instagram which features beautiful handmade bikes from around the world. So when […]

Mark’s 700c light and lined randonneur

September 26, 2018

Every bike that I make is a collaboration between the rider and myself but this time felt a little different. Mark and I are both part of the Classic Rendezvous community which celebrates vintage lightweight road bikes and components. This bike was to be inspired specifically by the vintage British lightweights with their elaborate lugs, […]

Vivek’s bilaminate road bike

September 16, 2018

Vivek came to me looking for a lightweight steel road bike and I was more than happy to build one for him. I was a little nervous about doing the bilaminate style head tube with chrome plating. That style of head tube has been executed by many builders but when there is chrome plating involved, […]

Harvey’s vintage inspired light touring bike

September 5, 2018

Part of what I enjoy most about making the bicycles is the challenge of delivering all that the rider wants without making any aesthetic sacrifices. Harvey came to me with a lot of components already in hand. Some were in better shape than others but all still had plenty of life left in them. The […]

I started making these fender reinforcements 3 yea I started making these fender reinforcements 3 years ago when the Honjo ones weren’t available. I thought I made a lot back then but I just ran out! I *think* I made enough this time to last me 5 years or so? It’s just one of the details that I enjoy including on the builds. The mold was made from a section of fender, a box, and a bunch of steel reinforced Cerrobend. That was a fun project in itself! I’ll share that video in my stories. #fenders #sheetmetal #sheetmetalfab #chapmancycles
It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so m It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so many good memories with but this one is going to a good home. I stripped and repainted this one a grayish-green version of its old self. I have a new bike now and so I needed to move this one to a place where it will get loved and ridden which is with a longtime friend in California. Enjoy your “new” bike, Chris! #chapmancycles
Refinished my old bike from green to another graye Refinished my old bike from green to another grayer green before it goes off to its new home. Brakes are cleaned and re-polished for the first time in 3 years. Good as new! I added an old clip of how the brakes work at the end. Enjoy! #weirdbrakewednesday #filletbrazed #chapmancycles
I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramoun I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramount. The water bottle boss was oddly 64mm too low on the down tube which functionally is mostly fine but visually was unbalanced. I filled the old lower boss and brazed in a new one higher on the tube. Primed and ready for basecoats now. #silverbrazing #chapmancycles
These Prugnat lugs may be understated but the clas These Prugnat lugs may be understated but the classic lines are stylish enough to hold my eye. Some more detail shots of Erik’s brick red metallic bike. The paint really comes to life in the sunlight! Again, thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is Erik’s brick red metallic 650b fendered road bike. This one was built around a heavily carved set of Prugnat lugs similar to two other bikes I have shown in Philly in previous years. Erik had this one completely planned out from the start. He provided all the parts which made the final stretch to the Expo go just a little quicker! I wasn’t able to take photos before the Expo because of weather and time constraints but thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! More detail photos of this one coming up tomorrow. #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
