Kim’s 650b loaded touring bike

Kim’s 650b loaded touring bike

September 1, 2017

I’m not going to lie, light colored bikes are near impossible to keep clean. But in due time, this pristine ivory colored touring bike will find its natural patina. Kim came to me looking for a bike capable of loaded touring with front and rear racks, disc brakes, integrated lighting, and the ability to charge […]

David’s all-road bike

David’s all-road bike

August 7, 2017

I’ve known David for about 10 years. My first memory of him is racing cyclocross with him in Palmer, MA and he did well…really well. I didn’t see him until the end of the race which he probably won. He’s always been fast because he’s just naturally a strong rider. More important about Dave though […]

Audra’s single speed

Audra’s single speed

June 13, 2017

Audra had the unfortunate experience of having her bike crumpled by a delivery truck. It backed into the pole on which her bike was locked. It was a beautiful custom single speed made by Circle A Cycles where I used to work. I didn’t have the original drawing but she wasn’t interested in an exact […]

Bob’s 650b road bike

Bob’s 650b road bike

April 12, 2017

I’ve known Bob for a while now. An avid rider who loves the bike. LOVES the bike. Longtime member of the Veteran-Cycle Club, Bob knows the joys of riding along an old road in New England on a classic steel bicycle. This 650b road bike (rack-less randonneur possibly?) is ready for some mixed terrain use. […]

Dynamo powered Di2 light touring bike, v2.0

Dynamo powered Di2 light touring bike, v2.0

March 9, 2017

In early 2011 I built myself a bike to ride in a technical trial of sorts called the Oregon Manifest. The purpose was to build a bike that would be ridden over a mixed surface course and it would score points based on whether or not it fulfilled a list of set criteria. It was […]

Deb’s mixte basket bike

Deb’s mixte basket bike

January 4, 2017

The basket has been a fixture in the bike world for as long as people needed to carry anything on a bike. The pros of the basket far outweigh the cons on a city bike like this mixte for Deb. It gives her easy access to what she’s carrying while allowing her to monitor it […]

Jon’s vélo léger

Jon’s vélo léger

December 12, 2016

Bikes that are light weight are a little more fun to ride, I’m just going to throw that one out there. With lightweight components and thin walled tubing, many steel bikes can hold their own in this age of aluminum and carbon bicycles. Jon was not obsessive about the bike’s weight but he definitely wanted […]

Barbara’s road bike

Barbara’s road bike

November 30, 2016

There is really only one type of person who needs a custom bicycle and that person is outside of the bicycle sizes commercially available in retail shops. Everyone else, myself included, just love bikes so much that they want one that was specially made for them. I’m guessing that Barbara is a little of column […]

Leslie’s 650B mixte city bike

Leslie’s 650B mixte city bike

November 29, 2016

When Leslie described what she was looking for in a city bike, the list wasn’t too long. She wanted a step-through style frame and the fit had to be perfect. She also wanted to address the previous issue of numbness in her hands. This bike achieved those goals and more. Because of her negative experiences […]

Varun’s disc tourer

Varun’s disc tourer

November 2, 2016

The bikes I’ve built up to this point have mostly adhered to traditional components and frame design. These standards exist because they’ve been tested in real world applications for over a century and they work. And while trying new technologies is not a huge leap for me, the technology in question has to make sense. […]

I started making these fender reinforcements 3 yea I started making these fender reinforcements 3 years ago when the Honjo ones weren’t available. I thought I made a lot back then but I just ran out! I *think* I made enough this time to last me 5 years or so? It’s just one of the details that I enjoy including on the builds. The mold was made from a section of fender, a box, and a bunch of steel reinforced Cerrobend. That was a fun project in itself! I’ll share that video in my stories. #fenders #sheetmetal #sheetmetalfab #chapmancycles
It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so m It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so many good memories with but this one is going to a good home. I stripped and repainted this one a grayish-green version of its old self. I have a new bike now and so I needed to move this one to a place where it will get loved and ridden which is with a longtime friend in California. Enjoy your “new” bike, Chris! #chapmancycles
Refinished my old bike from green to another graye Refinished my old bike from green to another grayer green before it goes off to its new home. Brakes are cleaned and re-polished for the first time in 3 years. Good as new! I added an old clip of how the brakes work at the end. Enjoy! #weirdbrakewednesday #filletbrazed #chapmancycles
I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramoun I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramount. The water bottle boss was oddly 64mm too low on the down tube which functionally is mostly fine but visually was unbalanced. I filled the old lower boss and brazed in a new one higher on the tube. Primed and ready for basecoats now. #silverbrazing #chapmancycles
These Prugnat lugs may be understated but the clas These Prugnat lugs may be understated but the classic lines are stylish enough to hold my eye. Some more detail shots of Erik’s brick red metallic bike. The paint really comes to life in the sunlight! Again, thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is Erik’s brick red metallic 650b fendered road bike. This one was built around a heavily carved set of Prugnat lugs similar to two other bikes I have shown in Philly in previous years. Erik had this one completely planned out from the start. He provided all the parts which made the final stretch to the Expo go just a little quicker! I wasn’t able to take photos before the Expo because of weather and time constraints but thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! More detail photos of this one coming up tomorrow. #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
