A scaled down road bike for Melinda

October 16, 2015

I don’t get a lot of requests for road bikes but oh, how I love to build them. And even more so if the person definitely needs a custom frame. And especially so if the person I’m building for is one of the nicest people on the planet. In this day and age niceness is […]

A Welsh Inspired City Bike

October 13, 2015

When Huw came to me for a city bike, he was not alone. He came with a crew of friends called the Bike Purchasing Committee (BPC)—two (originally) from Wales and two from state side. Although they say too many cooks spoil the broth, I was ultimately the cook catering specifically to Huw. I took the […]

Rick’s Road Bike

July 31, 2015

It’s not too often that I get the opportunity to build a straight up road bike. The geometry of the modern road bike has been evolving over the years based on frame design and component trends. Tires are getting bigger and a lot of road bikes don’t have the clearances needed. Although this one has […]

Nina’s 650B Road Bike

June 21, 2015

So Nina’s father got her a Schwinn World Voyager when she was a child. Now, we all have a fondness of our first nice bike and I understand why she loved it. It was a combination of the chrome, the orange, and the overall presentation. So when she wanted me to build her a bike, […]

Ted’s Travel Randonneur

May 20, 2015

Ted came to me looking for a new bike. He wanted a randonneur with lights, fenders, rack, and he wanted it to be a travel friendly bike. The challenge immediately started as there is not a whole lot of room in the 26″x26″x10″ case. The bike has 650x42B tires that fit nicely in the case […]

A touring bike for Michael with one of a kind racks

March 27, 2015

Michael came to me looking for a touring bike with specific requirements for the racks. Michael is a custom bag maker with some serious skills out of San Francisco. He designed a set of panniers that hold onto the rack via a long flap with velcro. Because of this, a slot needed to be incorporated […]

Roberto’s 650B city bike

December 22, 2014

It’s been a little while since I did my last 650B city bike. But judging by the upcoming builds on my list, it’s going to be a big year for the 650B wheel size. I’m not pushing the size one way or another, it just makes sense for certain applications. On this fillet brazed commuter, […]

Elton’s suspension trailer

November 20, 2014

I had made a trailer for myself a while back as a fun project and learned a lot from it. The goal this time was to build a trailer so smooth that you’d forget it was behind you while cruising down the street. To do that, I needed to make some design changes. For one, […]

Daren’s commuter

November 6, 2014

I spent 15 years commuting by bike to jobs here in the Providence area. The longest commute that I ever had was about 16 miles round trip. I realized when that commute started that the single speed with just a backpack was not the ideal choice for the ride. I needed something with some gears […]

Pascal's cyclotouring bike

Pascal’s cyclotouring bike

October 11, 2014

When this bike was on display at the Bike Cult Show in NYC in August, the first thing anyone did was reach for the brake levers. They are new levers based on an old style called guidonnet (from the French word “guidon” for handlebar). In conjunction with the brazed on MAFAC Racer brakes with modern […]

I started making these fender reinforcements 3 yea I started making these fender reinforcements 3 years ago when the Honjo ones weren’t available. I thought I made a lot back then but I just ran out! I *think* I made enough this time to last me 5 years or so? It’s just one of the details that I enjoy including on the builds. The mold was made from a section of fender, a box, and a bunch of steel reinforced Cerrobend. That was a fun project in itself! I’ll share that video in my stories. #fenders #sheetmetal #sheetmetalfab #chapmancycles
It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so m It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so many good memories with but this one is going to a good home. I stripped and repainted this one a grayish-green version of its old self. I have a new bike now and so I needed to move this one to a place where it will get loved and ridden which is with a longtime friend in California. Enjoy your “new” bike, Chris! #chapmancycles
Refinished my old bike from green to another graye Refinished my old bike from green to another grayer green before it goes off to its new home. Brakes are cleaned and re-polished for the first time in 3 years. Good as new! I added an old clip of how the brakes work at the end. Enjoy! #weirdbrakewednesday #filletbrazed #chapmancycles
I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramoun I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramount. The water bottle boss was oddly 64mm too low on the down tube which functionally is mostly fine but visually was unbalanced. I filled the old lower boss and brazed in a new one higher on the tube. Primed and ready for basecoats now. #silverbrazing #chapmancycles

Some more detail shots of Erik’s brick red metallic bike. The paint really comes to life in the sunlight! Again, thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is Erik’s brick red metallic 650b fendered road bike. This one was built around a heavily carved set of Prugnat lugs similar to two other bikes I have shown in Philly in previous years. Erik had this one completely planned out from the start. He provided all the parts which made the final stretch to the Expo go just a little quicker! I wasn’t able to take photos before the Expo because of weather and time constraints but thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! More detail photos of this one coming up tomorrow. #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
