Jacquie’s touring bike

May 4, 2021

There’s a lot to say about this bike so I’ll try to keep it concise (but I will go on about Jacquie). When founding WOMBAT, former pro MTB rider, and all around rad person Jacquie Phelan asked me to build her a bike, my heart skipped a beat. We have a few mutual friends but […]

Jason’s eccentric single speed

May 4, 2021

I can count on my hand the number of single speeds I’ve built under my own name. Those few bikes are some of my favorites and this one is no different. I don’t know if it’s the color, the big tires, the rack, or the simplicity of a single speed but this bike makes me […]

Stephanie’s 650b all-road bike

May 4, 2021

This bike was started right as the coronavirus pandemic was picking up back in March, 2020 and then the world was turned upside down. This is officially the longest it’s ever taken me to make a bicycle. Working so few hours in the shop is the main and obvious reason. Bi-laminate construction, custom rack, custom […]

Glenn’s 700c randonneur

January 6, 2021

“I only build complete bikes” is what I’ve always said. But there are always times when I make exceptions. This was a unique situation where Glenn is a mechanic who takes great pride in the assembly of his bicycles. I handed the bike off to him as you see it here. I was in charge […]

June’s rinko randonneur

November 9, 2020

I started working on John’s rinko bike in late 2019, if my memory serves me correctly. It was one of those bikes that I knew was going to be a challenge for me. I had never done a rinko travel bike but I had seen many other builders do them. I liked the concept even though the actual use for traveling might be minimal.

Laila and Steve’s matching bikes

Laila and Steve’s matching bikes

March 17, 2020

When Steve and Laila came to me with the idea of a matching pair of bikes I was pretty excited. It wasn’t anything I’ve ever done before and I thought that the process would be sped up a little since I’d be doing two of everything. Well, only one of those things was true. These […]

Tom’s 700c road bike

Tom’s 700c road bike

November 12, 2019

Tom is a tall fellow and was interested in having me build a bike around a 650b wheel size. After plugging in all the numbers and designing the frame, he went with a 700x38c for a more balanced bike. The frame ended up being 64cm with standard oversized tubing and a tapered down tube. It […]

Kim’s 650b+ all road bicycle

Kim’s 650b+ all road bicycle

September 15, 2019

This is the second bike I’ve built for Kim and it is very different from his first. I don’t build a lot of bikes in the drop bar MTB style but it’s definitely growing on me. Kim knew what he wanted right down to the color and I was excited to make it. Clean lines […]

Joe’s 650b Rohloff touring bike

Joe’s 650b Rohloff touring bike

August 28, 2019

I haven’t built a whole lot of Rohloff Speedhub equipped bikes but I find them to be a curious challenge. Every builder seems to have their own way of handling the dropouts, the shifter, or the nuances of cables and routing. The last one I made was a travel bike outfitted with couplers and fenders. […]

Ted’s classic inspired road bike

Ted’s classic inspired road bike

May 17, 2019

Being that this is the second bike that I’ve built for Ted, I thought the process would go quicker. The fact that it’s a road bike should have also made it go quicker but alas, it didn’t. There’s a lot of details integrated into this lightweight roadie. There are loads of ways this bike could’ve […]

I started making these fender reinforcements 3 yea I started making these fender reinforcements 3 years ago when the Honjo ones weren’t available. I thought I made a lot back then but I just ran out! I *think* I made enough this time to last me 5 years or so? It’s just one of the details that I enjoy including on the builds. The mold was made from a section of fender, a box, and a bunch of steel reinforced Cerrobend. That was a fun project in itself! I’ll share that video in my stories. #fenders #sheetmetal #sheetmetalfab #chapmancycles
It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so m It’s hard to let bikes go that you’ve had so many good memories with but this one is going to a good home. I stripped and repainted this one a grayish-green version of its old self. I have a new bike now and so I needed to move this one to a place where it will get loved and ridden which is with a longtime friend in California. Enjoy your “new” bike, Chris! #chapmancycles
Refinished my old bike from green to another graye Refinished my old bike from green to another grayer green before it goes off to its new home. Brakes are cleaned and re-polished for the first time in 3 years. Good as new! I added an old clip of how the brakes work at the end. Enjoy! #weirdbrakewednesday #filletbrazed #chapmancycles
I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramoun I’m in the middle of a repaint on a 90s Paramount. The water bottle boss was oddly 64mm too low on the down tube which functionally is mostly fine but visually was unbalanced. I filled the old lower boss and brazed in a new one higher on the tube. Primed and ready for basecoats now. #silverbrazing #chapmancycles
These Prugnat lugs may be understated but the clas These Prugnat lugs may be understated but the classic lines are stylish enough to hold my eye. Some more detail shots of Erik’s brick red metallic bike. The paint really comes to life in the sunlight! Again, thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is The final bike from this @phillybikeexpo series is Erik’s brick red metallic 650b fendered road bike. This one was built around a heavily carved set of Prugnat lugs similar to two other bikes I have shown in Philly in previous years. Erik had this one completely planned out from the start. He provided all the parts which made the final stretch to the Expo go just a little quicker! I wasn’t able to take photos before the Expo because of weather and time constraints but thanks to Erik and @brad.quartuccio for the photos! More detail photos of this one coming up tomorrow. #lugs #lugsnotdrugs #chapmancycles
